Durability

Overview

This article explains how durability factors are assessed when quoting and engineering a building site in SteelX. Identifying Marine or Industrial influences helps determine whether special materials or considerations are required to maintain warranty and performance.

Why This Is Important

  • Ensures the correct materials (like COLORBOND® Ultra) are specified.
  • Protects the building warranty against corrosion and environmental damage.
  • Provides clear guidance for site-specific engineering decisions.

How to Assess Durability Factors

1. Understanding the Durability Factor

The Durability Factor determines the likelihood that Marine or Industrial influences will affect the building and its warranty.
Durability factors are assessed within a 1km radius of the shed location and are visually indicated by a yellow circle when you pin a site on the map.

2. Marine Influence

A Marine Influence applies if, within 1km of the site, there are areas containing salt or brackish water, such as:

  • Oceans
  • Rivers
  • Waterways
  • Lakes

3. Industrial Influence

An Industrial Influence applies if, within 1km of the site, there is industrial activity likely to expose the building materials to:

  • Heavy dust
  • Emission fallout
  • Heat or moisture
  • Corrosive chemicals or acids

This exposure can occur internally or externally.

4. Identifying Influence Zones

When conducting Site Specific Engineering:

  • Use the yellow circle on the map to see the proximity to coastal or industrial environments.
  • If Marine or Industrial Influence applies, consider specifying COLORBOND® Ultra steel or other appropriate materials.

Tips, Best Practices & Troubleshooting

  • Always check the 1km radius indicator before finalising a quote.
  • Document any observations about nearby water bodies or industrial sites.
  • If unsure whether Marine or Industrial Influence applies, consult with Engineering Support.
  • Advise customers that certain sites may require upgraded materials, which can affect pricing.
