Importance Level 1 (IL1)
Overview
Buildings or structures classified as Importance Level 1 (IL1) present a low degree of hazard to life and other property in the event of failure.
This classification is often used for minor or isolated structures where the risk to surrounding property or public areas is minimal.
Why this is important
Selecting IL1 reduces engineering requirements, but only where appropriate
Misclassification may lead to engineering upgrades (and extra cost)
Ensures compliance with ShedSafe® and Australian engineering standards
Site criteria – what qualifies as IL1?
To be considered IL1, the structure must meet all of the following conditions within a 200m radius (the blue circle in ShedSafe):
a. The building presents a low hazard to nearby buildings
b. No property boundaries are crossed
c. No public roads are within 200m
🛈 “Other property” includes nearby buildings, roads, and boundaries.
Examples of IL1 buildings
Farm buildings and farm sheds
Isolated minor storage facilities
Minor temporary facilities
Considerations when nominating IL1 in ShedSafe®
Salespeople can select IL1 at any time in ShedSafe®. However:
If any of the IL1 criteria are not met, engineers will automatically upgrade the building to IL2
Cost increases due to engineering changes must be covered by the franchise or customer
Tips & best practices
Always assess surroundings using Google Maps or an on-site visit
Avoid using IL1 unless you're confident all conditions are met
Confirm zoning or local council info when needed
