Importance Level 2 (IL2)

Overview

Importance Level 2 (IL2) is the default classification for buildings and structures not included in Importance Level 1, 3, or 4.

It is commonly used for residential, commercial, and low-risk public buildings located near other structures or infrastructure.

Why this is important

  • IL2 buildings are subject to standard engineering requirements

  • Helps ensure compliance with the National Construction Code (NCC 2022)

  • Avoids under-engineering when IL1 is incorrectly selected

  • Impacts the overall cost and design limits within SMS

Examples of Importance Level 2 buildings

  • Buildings within 200m of residences, boundaries, roads, or power lines

  • Houses, hotels, offices, and commercial outlets

  • Car parking buildings

  • Low-rise residential construction

  • Buildings and facilities below the limits set for Importance Level 3

🛈 Note: The price difference between IL1 and IL2 can be significant. Only use IL1 if it is appropriate.
