BlueScope Steel

Overview

BlueScope Steel is a flat product steel producer with operations across Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific Islands, North America and Asia.

The company was demerged from BHP Billiton on 22 July 2002 as BHP Steel and was renamed BlueScope Steel on 17 November 2003.

BlueScope Steel’s corporate headquarters are located at 120 Collins Street, Melbourne, Victoria. The company employs approximately 16,000 personnel and operates its largest integrated steelworks at Port Kembla near Wollongong in the Illawarra region of New South Wales.

Tinplate production ceased in March 2007.

In October 2011, BlueScope shut down the No.6 blast furnace at Port Kembla, reducing production capacity by 50% following the decision to exit the export market.
