Wind Region B

Overview

Region B follows behind Region C along the Australian coastline from Grafton, NSW, over the top of Australia to Leeman in WA.

The regional wind speeds (Vr) in Region B range from:

  • 48 m/s (172.8 km/h) for Importance Level 1 (IL1), up to

  • 63 m/s (226.8 km/h) for Importance Level 4 (IL4).

Why this is important

  • Correct wind region classification ensures safe and compliant building design.

  • Regional wind speed directly impacts structural engineering requirements.

  • Prevents under- or over-designing by applying the correct AS 1170 standards.

Tips, best practices & troubleshooting

  • Always confirm the wind region in SMS by pinning the site location accurately.

  • Check for overlaps near boundaries between Region B and other wind regions.

  • Refer to AS 1170 standards when confirming regional wind speeds.
