Wind Region D

Overview

Region D covers a small part of Western Australia, extending 50 km inland from Pardoo to Carnarvon.

The regional wind speeds (Vr) in Region D range from:

  • 66 m/s (267.6 km/h) for Importance Level 1 (IL1), up to

  • 90 m/s (324.0 km/h) for Importance Level 4 (IL4).

Why this is important

  • Region D has the highest regional wind speeds in Australia.

  • Correct classification is critical for safe and compliant building design.

  • Prevents under-engineering of structures in areas subject to extreme wind loads.

Tips, best practices & troubleshooting

  • Always confirm the wind region in SMS by accurately pinning the site.

  • Double-check when quoting in WA coastal areas near Pardoo and Carnarvon.
