Terrain Category 2

Overview

Terrain Category 2 (TC 2) describes open terrain with well-scattered obstructions. It’s commonly applied to rural or semi-developed areas where objects are spaced far enough apart not to significantly block wind flow.

Why This Is Important

  • Used in wind classification for accurate structural engineering.
  • Helps determine wind loads on buildings in lightly developed areas.
  • Ensures safety and compliance with design standards.

Characteristics

  • Obstructions are generally 1.5 to 5 meters in height.
  • No more than two obstructions per hectare.

Examples

  • Farmland
  • Cleared subdivisions with isolated trees and uncut grass
  • Crops less than 600 mm high

Tips, Best Practices & Troubleshooting

  • Use aerial or site imagery to confirm spacing and size of obstructions.
  • If unsure between TC 2 and 2.5, consult engineering support.
  • Accurate terrain classification helps avoid over/under-engineering.
