Skylights

Overview

Skylights supplied within SMS are made from 2400 gsm industrial-grade translucent fibreglass sheeting, allowing indirect natural light into the building interior.

Why this is important

  • Provides natural lighting to reduce energy costs.

  • Improves visibility and comfort within steel structures.

  • Adds flexibility to shed designs by integrating lighting features.

Important notes

  • SMS does not supply polycarbonate skylights.

  • Skylights are not available in cyclonic regions.

  • Skylights can be added to lean-tos.

Adding skylights

To apply skylights in SMS:

  1. Go to the Roof Sheeting section.

  2. Enter the number of skylights required.

Each number represents one sheeting length.

You can apply up to two skylight sheets per bay, starting from bay one on the left side of the building (bays labelled A–B–C).

Positioning and removing skylights

To move a skylight

  1. Click on the skylight within the building layout.

  2. A black frame will appear around the skylight.

  3. Click the new desired position — the skylight will move to that location.

To remove a skylight

  • Click the skylight and press Delete, or

  • Reopen the skylight configuration window and reduce the skylight count.

Tips, best practices & troubleshooting

  • Always confirm skylight location with the client before finalising the design.

  • Avoid installing skylights in high wind or cyclonic regions.

  • Combine skylights with Vent-A-Roof systems for enhanced light and ventilation balance.

  • Keep skylights evenly spaced for a professional finish and consistent light distribution.
