COLORBOND® steel is engineered to withstand Australia’s extreme and varied climate conditions. It undergoes extensive testing—including corrosion, durability, application, and outdoor exposure testing—to ensure long-term performance across a wide range of environments.

How COLORBOND® Steel Is Manufactured

The Steel Production Process

BlueScope manufactures genuine COLORBOND® steel in Australia to meet AS1397 and AS/NZS 2728 standards. The material is more than a painted surface—each layer is designed to maximise durability and longevity.

Layered Protection System

Base Steel
- Manufactured to relevant Australian Standards for grade and strength.
Metallic Coating
- Coated with BlueScope’s metallic coating featuring Activate® technology* for improved corrosion resistance.
Pretreatment Layer
- Applied to optimise adhesion for subsequent coatings.
Corrosion Inhibitive Primer
- Baked onto the surface for additional protection.
Exterior Topcoat
- A specially developed paint finish baked on to resist chipping, flaking and blistering, helping maintain its appearance for longer.
