Class 4 Buildings - Not Supported

Overview
This article explains what Class 4 buildings are and clarifies that ShedSafe and SMS do not support this classification.
Why This Is Important
- Ensures users do not attempt to quote or design unsupported building types.
- Helps identify when a project involves a Class 4 part within a non-residential building.
- Supports compliance with the National Construction Code (NCC).
What Are Class 4 Buildings?
- A Class 4 part of a building is a dwelling or residence located within a non-residential building.
- This part must be the only residence in the building.
Examples
- A caretaker’s residence in a storage facility.
Important Rules
- A Class 4 part can only be located in a Class 5 to 9 building.
- It cannot be located in a Class 1, 2, or 3 building.
- There can only be one Class 4 part per building.

🚫 ShedSafe and SMS do NOT support Class 4 buildings.
Any enquiries for Class 4 designs should be referred to an appropriately qualified engineering or architectural firm.
Tips, Best Practices & Troubleshooting
- Confirm whether the project includes a residence within another building classification.
- Ask: “Is this the only dwelling in the building?”
- If yes, and the building is otherwise Class 5–9, it is likely Class 4.
- If unsure, consult NCC Volume One or an accredited certifier.
- Advise customers early that Class 4 projects are not supported in SteelX systems.
