Class 9 Building Subclassifications
1. Class 9a – Health-Care Buildings
These are generally hospitals or buildings where medical treatment is administered, and occupants may need physical assistance to evacuate in an emergency.
This includes:
- Clinics or day surgeries
- Places where patients become unconscious or immobile during/after treatment
- Premises requiring on-site supervised medical care after treatment
2. Class 9b – Assembly Buildings
These are places where people gather for social, theatrical, political, religious, or civil purposes, such as:
- Schools
- Universities
- Childcare centers
- Pre-schools
- Sporting facilities
- Night clubs
- Public transport buildings
3. Class 9c – Aged Care Buildings
These are residential accommodations for elderly people who:
- Have varying levels of incapacity from aging
- Are provided with personal care services
- Require 24-hour staff assistance to evacuate in emergencies

Laboratories located within health-care buildings are classified as Class 9a, despite general laboratory classification being Class 8.
